What is Nail Fungus Infection (Onychomycosis), How is it Transmitted?
What is Nail Fungus, How is it Transmitted Nail fungus is a type of fungal infection caused by dermatophyte fungi. This condition, which occurs on toenails and fingernails, is a disease that negatively affects the patient's social life. Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, starts at the outer edge of the nail. The infection then spreads into the nail and under the nail, which can result in the complete loss of the nail. Initially, due to the fungus starting at the nail edge, the nail turns a whitish-yellow color. Over time, as the infection progresses, it causes the nail to turn green and brown. Untreated nail fungus in a timely manner can damage the nail structure, causing it to thicken and consequently lead to permanent nail loss. Nail fungus can be transmitted from any place where it is commonly used. Common use of places and items such as bathrooms, changing rooms, showers used in sports clubs, swimming pools, Turkish baths, saunas, towels, pedicure, and manicure equipment is quite effective in the transmission of the fungus. Prevention of Nail Fungus To protect yourself from nail fungus, you need to pay attention to a few points. Wash your hands regularly. Ensure the cleanliness of the place where you get your pedicure or manicure. Take care not to go to places like swimming pools, Turkish baths, saunas, etc., whose cleanliness you are unsure of, and do not use items that others have used (slippers, towels, socks, gloves, etc.). Wash your feet regularly. Be sure to dry every part, including between your toes. Wear shoes that fit your feet.
